COLUMBUS, TX — The climb continues for former six-man football star Grayson Rigdon.
The Columbus High School running back announced his commitment to North Carolina State on Monday morning after he made an official visit to the campus over the weekend.
Rigdon, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound three-star prospect, won three consecutive state titles in six-man football and was named the state’s player of the year each time.
He made the jump to 11-man ball this year, and he has helped Columbus to an 11-1 record and a spot in the regional semifinals this week.
Rigdon previously committed to Air Force before his senior season.
Last week, he announced that the seven schools he was considering were Wyoming, Abilene Christian, Tarleton State, North Texas, New Mexico, Missouri State and Tennessee State.
North Carolina State, it seems, came out of nowhere to sign Rigdon.
It’s rare for six-man players to get college opportunities, especially at a NCAA Division I school like NC State.
However, Rigon has had a season to show what he can do at the 11-man level, which makes a big difference.
He’s also a special athlete, evidenced by what he has done on the basketball court. He led the nation in scoring last year by averaging over 45 points per game.
Rigdon played junior high football at Richland Springs before transferring the summer before his freshman year to Strawn.
He then won the 2021 title at Strawn, followed by back-to-back titles at Benjamin in 2022 and ‘23. His teams were 45-0 during those years.
