ABILENE, TX — San Angelo Central graduate Maverick McIvor is finishing his college football career with a spectacular season at Abilene Christian University.
McIvor has thrown for 3,604 yards in 11 games, which leads the nation in NCAA Division I FCS.
Last week, McIcvor led ACU to a 35-31 win over Tarleton State, directing a last-minute 75-yard touchdown drive that was capped with 19 seconds remaining.
McIvor was a perfect 9-of-9 passing on the final drive — with the exception of three clock-killing spikes.
The Wildcats are ranked No. 12 in the nation and heading to the playoffs for the first time since 2011. They’re also conference champions for the first time since moving up to the Division I ranks in 2013.
It’s been an incredible journey for McIvor, who began his football career as a six-man player in the far West Texas town of Fort Davis.
He made the jump to 6A ball as a wide receiver for San Angelo Central as a sophomore, and he was pressed into action at quarterback against No. 1 Allen in the third round of the 2016 playoffs when starting QB Cal Vincent was injured.
McIvor took off the next year as the Bobcats’ starting QB and threw for 3,415 yards and 43 TDs, along with 870 rushing yards in 12 games.
He was offered scholarships by more than 20 NCAA Division I schools, including USC and Ole Miss, before signing with Texas Tech.
Unfortunately, McIvor suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 2 of his senior season at Central in 2018. He was then injured in a preseason practice at Texas Tech and never saw game action.
McIvor finally returned to the field in 2022 after transferring to ACU, and he has played in every game since then.
In 32 games at ACU, he has thrown for 7,788 yards and 61 TDs.
ACU is 8-3 heading into its regular-season finale Saturday against Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches. The Wildcats will begin the playoffs the following week.
