BROCK, TX— The Miles Bulldogs traveled to Brock’s Eagle Stadium and took on the Lindsey Knights in the Bi-District Round of the Texas High School Playoffs.
The Bulldogs (8-2, 4-1), led by sophomore quarterback Liam Yancy, were the second seed coming out of 2A-2 District 7 and the Knights (7-3, 3-2), led by junior signal caller Lane Foster, were the third seed out of 2A-2 District 8.
It was a rollercoaster night for the Miles Bulldogs that ultimately ended up with disappointment as the Lindsey Knights claimed victory, 34-27.
Miles won the toss and deferred until the second half. They kicked off to the Knights who took over just on their side of the field. On the drive, Foster pulled the ball and sprinted down the Miles sideline for a quick score to put Lindsey up 0-7 with 11:09 left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs got the ball and after a holding call on third down, had to punt the ball away.
With 4:23 left in the first quarter, the Knights’ Foster threw it to #7, junior Joseph Manhart, who got behind Bulldogs defender #3, senior Sheldon Book, for a long touchdown. After a successful point after try, the Knights led the Bulldogs, 14-0.
The Bulldogs had enough and shortly after the Knights extended their lead, Yancy found #6, senior Dillon Medina on 3rd and 5 for a long pass down the Knights’ sideline. A good extra point and the Bulldogs were solidly on the board, 14-7.
One quarter down and the Knights were up by 7, but it wouldn’t take long for Lindsey to put more points on the board as Cason Williford would find the endzone making the score 21-7 with 10:33 left in the first half.
As the second quarter was ending, the Bulldogs needed to drive nearly 70 yards inside the 2-minute mark to put bring the game back within a touchdown. Yancy would find Dillon Medina, Keegan Walz, and Cooper Ellison on the drive to get the Bulldogs into scoring position. Then, with :33 left in the half, Yancy tossed the ball to the back of the endzone where Ellison went up-and-over Lindsey’s Issac Fuhrmann for the touchdown. The Bulldogs closed the gap, 21-14 going into halftime.
After halftime, the Bulldogs ended up punting the ball to the Knights and with 7:23 left in the third quarter, Dillon Medina stripped the ball from Simon Thurman around midfield and the Bulldogs took over possession.
On the ensuing drive, the Bulldogs were going in for a score from about the 15-yard line. Yancy loaded up a pass for Walz in the endzone, but Lindsey’s Foster would be called for defensive pass interference, placing the on the goal line. Bulldogs’ running back Jaylen Torres surged forward through the line for a short, quick score to tie up the game, 21-21, with 5:10 left in the third quarter.
The quarter ended with the Bulldogs driving and the score still tied, 21-21.
Early in the final quarter, Yancy found Ellison for a 10-yard touchdown. The Bulldogs took the lead but this time without an extra point. Nevertheless, Miles claimed the lead, 27-21, with 10:54 left in the game.
With 5:55 left, Lindsey had possession and Devin Medina zeroed in on Foster for a sack. After running two minutes off the clock, Thurman for the Knights found the endzone for a touchdown. On the point after attempt, a low snap sent the field into chaos and the Bulldogs held the Knights out of the endzone to keep the game tied, 27-27.
There were, however, some extra-curricular activities as a Knight player threw a punch. Flags were thrown all over the place and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty set the kickoff back.
With two minutes to play, three Knight defenders were closing in on Yancy who got the ball off just in time to avoid a sack, but Lindsey’s Mason Myers picked the ball that was intended for Ellison.
With a play extremely similar to Lindsey’s first touchdown, Foster took the snap around the left side of the field and in for a quick touchdown to reclaim the lead, 34-27, with 1:41 left in the game.
It all came down to the final minute of the game and the Bulldogs needed to drive just over half the field to send the game into overtime. Yancy again launched the ball for Ellison, if Lindsey’s Foster didn’t tip the ball to Myers for an interception.
Lindsey was able to kneel out the clock and take home a gold ball.
The Lindsey Knights will play Windthorst Trojans who won their Bi-District game against the Quanah Indians, 62-14.
