Friday Night Football Roundup: Robert Lee Holds Off Veribest to Earn Playoff Spot

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here's a roundup of high school football highlights from around West Texas in Week 10:

Robert Lee Holds Off Veribest to Secure Playoff Spot

In a winner-take-all game for the second and final playoff spot in District 8-1A, Robert Lee held on for a 76-63 win over Veribest on Friday.

Brenner Sherwood ran for 331 yards and eight touchdowns — and added 166 passing yards and two TDs — to lead the Steers.

The game was tied 24-24 when it was delayed due to lightning late in the first quarter.

When the game resumed, Robert Lee scored the next 24 points, and Veribest was playing catch-up the rest of the way.

The Falcons twice pulled within seven points, including at 70-63 with 5:50 remaining on Bryce Martin’s 36-yard TD run.

Robert Lee put the game away, however, with Brenner Sherwood’s eighth TD run of the night with 2:48 left.

Martin had four TD runs and four TD passes to lead Veribest. Peyton Larson had three TD catches.

Josh Garcez had 12 tackles to lead Robert Lee’s defense. Anthony Landeros had an interception.

Robert Lee finished its regular season at 7-3 overall and 3-1 in district. The Steers will enjoy a bye week before beginning the playoffs in two weeks.

The Falcons would be a playoff team in many districts around the state, but they’ll again miss out on the postseason after another third-place finish.

Veribest fell to 6-3, 1-2. The Falcons will close out their season next week at Irion County.

Christoval Shakes Up District Race With Win Over Sonora

The Christoval Cougars earned a 20-13 win on the road over Sonora that considerably changes the landscape of District 3-2A Division I.

Christoval is now tied for third place in the standings with Forsan at 2-2, while Sonora is on the outside looking in with a 1-3 record in fifth place.

The Broncos could still make the playoffs with a win at Colorado City next week, but they’ll need some help.

Christoval, meanwhile, could move as high as second place with a win at home over Ozona next week, but the Cougars could also end up on the wrong side of a tiebreaker with a loss.

Sonora managed to score only 13 points Friday despite Dylan Ford going for over 100 yards rushing and receiving. The Broncos senior had 10 carries for 122 yards and a TD, along with eight catches for 120 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Aaron Segura threw for 256 yards on 19-of-29 passing with one interception. Kam Aguero had seven catches for 102 yards.

Yet the Cougars’ defense stood strong when it mattered most and helped pick up what may be a season-saving win.

Stats for Christoval are currently unavailable.

Christoval improved to 3-6 overall, while Sonora fell to 4-5.

Tolar Too Much for Brady

The Brady Bulldogs fell 42-21 in a first-place district battle with Tolar.

A state finalist from last year, Tolar quickly took control against Brady with a 35-14 halftime lead.

Rattlers running back Peyton Brown did much of the damage with 22 carries for 208 yards and two TDs.

Brady’s rushing attack was slowed considerably as Ashton Taylor was held to 18 carries for 66 yards, while Johnny Menefield had only six carries for 27 yards.

Brady quarterback Sean Jacoby was 8-of-12 passing for 140 yards.

Tolar improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in District 5-3A Division II, while Brady fell to 7-2, 3-1.

Tolar will finish the regular season next week at Eastland. Brady will host Clifton (6-3, 3-1) in a matchup for the district’s No. 2 seed.

Miles Races Past Winters

Liam Yancy threw five touchdown passes to lead Miles to a 55-0 win over Winters.

The sophomore QB was 16-of-23 passing for 265 yards.

Cooper Ellison had eight catches for 142 yards and two TDs, while Dillon Medina had six catches for 81 yards and two TDs. Keagan Walz also had a TD catch.

Tevin Meade led Miles’ ground game with 12 carries for 107 yards and a TD. Ryder Satepauhoodle had seven carries for 63 yards and a TD.

Miles improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in District 7-1A Division II. The Bulldogs will host Roscoe next week for second place in district.

Winters (2-7, 0-4) will finish its season next week at Cross Plains.

Coleman Edges Ballinger in Low-Scoring Battle

The Coleman Bluecats held off Ballinger 14-7 to secure third place in District 5-2A Division I.

Ballinger’s season is now on the line as the Bearcats will travel to Hico next week for a game that will decide the district’s fourth and final playoff spot.

Ballinger trailed 8-7 much of the night and could never break through for the go-ahead score.

Brent Bouldin’s 1-yard TD run with about four minutes remaining extended Coleman’s lead to 14-7.

Coleman began its season 0-7 but has turned it around with back-to-back wins. The Bluecats will host Bangs next week.

Ballinger fell to 4-5 overall and 1-3 in district.

Brown Throws 7 TDs in Reagan County's Win Over Colorado City

Reagan County quarterback Jarrett Brown threw for 475 yards and seven TDs on 19-of-23 passing in a 62-6 win over Colorado City.

Nick Franklin had eight catches for 144 yards and two TDs, Omrie Johnson had two catches for 142 yards and two TDs, and Kason Brown had seven catches for 92 yards and two TDs. Dominic Johnson also had a TD catch.

Reagan County improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in District 3-2A Division I, securing the title with Friday's win. The Owls will close out the regular season next week at Forsan.

Colorado City (2-7, 0-4) will host Sonora next week.
