Lake View Chiefs Fall Just Short Against Big Spring

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lake View Chiefs were unable to complete a late comeback Thursday in a 28-21 loss to Big Spring at San Angelo Stadium.

Lake View had a chance to tie the game — or even take the lead — with a drive that began at the Chiefs' 33-yard line with 2:24 remaining.

A sack by Big Spring's DJ Franks, the nephew of former NFL tight end Bubba Franks, quickly derailed the drive, and Lake View was never able to threaten.

It's the fourth time this year that Lake View has lost by eight points or less, including back-to-back close losses to begin district play.

"They're resilient. They don't give up, and you love that. That shows that the culture's changing," Lake View head coach Hector Guevara said. "The togetherness, the effort, the character, all the positives are coming out. It's just showing what they're going to be in the future."

Lake View has a young team with only 15 seniors. Many of the Chiefs' playmakers — such as quarterback Chris Alvizo, wide receiver Braylon White and running back Izaiah Rios — are underclassmen.

Trailing 28-14 entering the fourth quarter, Lake View made it a one-score game when senior Francisco Ramirez caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Alvizo with 6:27 remaining.

Lake View's defense made a stand to get its offense the ball back, but Big Spring's disruptive pass rush proved to be the difference on the Chiefs' final drive when Franks dropped Alvizo for a 15-yard loss.

"Their pass rushers did a good job up front, and we didn't do a good job adjusting," Guevara said.

Alvizo was 21-of-33 passing for 154 yards and three TDs with one interception.

Ramirez had six catches for 49 yards and a TD (along with an interception on defense), while White had eight catches for 43 yards and a TD.

Rios led Lake View on the ground with eight carries for 89 yards.

Big Spring running back Xander Garza had 23 carries for 138 yards to lead the Steers' hurry-up offense, which moved at a blistering pace, quickly snapping the ball after the previous play ended.

Quarterback AJ Yanez had two TD runs and threw TD passes to Kaine Valenzuela and Jacobi Lozano.

"I think our kids did a pretty good job overall," said Guevara about trying to contain Big Spring's quick offense. "We just couldn't move the ball offensively consistently, and that's what we needed."

Lake View marched 81 yards to score on the opening drive of the game, but the Chiefs didn't find the end zone again until midway through the third quarter to get within 21-14.

Lake View fell to 2-7 overall and 0-2 in District 3-4A Division I. Big Spring improved to 4-5, 1-1.

The Chiefs will close out the regular season next week at Andrews, while the Steers will host Pecos.
