Friday Night Football Roundup: Water Valley Holds Off Robert Lee

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here's a roundup of high school football highlights from around West Texas in Week 9:

Water Valley Holds Off Robert Lee

The Water Valley Wildcats earned a 62-50 win at Robert Lee on Friday to take command of the District 8-1A Division I race.

Water Valley is 6-2 overall and 2-0 in district — with wins over both of its top contenders for the district title.

Robert Lee and Veribest will now square off for the district’s second and final playoff when they meet next week in Veribest.

Water Valley was led Friday by Landon Lacy, who had three touchdown runs and four TD passes.

Anthony Quintana had three TD catches and ran for a score.

Lacy’s 19-yard TD run with 1:26 left in the second quarter gave Water Valley a 30-22 lead at halftime.

The Wildcats began building on that lead in the third quarter and took a 62-36 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Robert Lee outscored Water Valley 14-0 in the fourth quarter.

The Steers were led by Brenner Sherwood, who had 21 carries for 261 yards and three TDs. He was also 16-of-28 passing for 255 yards and two TDs.

Wyatt Bosworth had six catches for 165 yards and a TD. He also had 10 tackles and a forced fumble.

Robert Lee fell to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in district.

Water Valley will host Irion County next week.

No. 6 Wall Rolls Past Grape Creek

Landon York put together another strong passing performance to lead the No. 6-ranked Wall Hawks to a 58-6 win over Grape Creek.

York threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns while completing 15 of 20 passes. 

Briggs Jones hauled in four passes for 118 yards and a TD. Brylan White, Lane Stansberry and Evan Boehle also had TD catches.

Thomas Leanos had five carries for 110 yards and two TDs.

Wall improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in District 4-3A Division II. The Hawks will be off next week before closing the regular season at home against Stanton on Nov. 8.

Grape Creek fell to 3-6, 1-2. The Eagles will host Merkel next week in their regular-season finale.

Meade Returns to Help Miles Shut Out Hamlin

Dynamic running back Tevin Meade returned after missing several games due to injury to help the Miles Bulldogs to a 41-0 win over Hamlin.

Meade had just 10 carries, but he turned them into 98 yards and a TD.

The Bulldogs had two 100-yard receivers in Dillon Medina (5-106, TD) and Cooper Ellison (4-101, 2 TDs).

Liam Yancy was 13-of-22 passing for 243 yards and three TDs with two interceptions.

Jaylen Torres had nine tackles, an interception and recovered a blocked punt for a TD to lead the way on defense and special teams.

Miles improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in District 7-2A Division II. The Bulldogs will play at Winters next week.

Hamlin fell to 5-3 and 1-2. The Pied Pipers will host Cross Plains next week.

Jacoby’s Perfect Passing Game Leads Brady Over Early

The Brady Bulldogs don’t pass much, but quarterback Sean Jacoby was a perfect 10-of-10 passing for 100 yards when his team wanted to take to the air in a 42-15 win over Early.

Once again, the backfield duo of Johnny Menefield (17 carries, 137 yards, 2 TDs) and Ashton Taylor (20-120, 3 TDs) powered Brady’s rushing attack.

Gauge Evans had two interceptions on defense, while Demarcus Reed had seven tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble.

Brady has won six consecutive games, and the Bulldogs are now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in District 5-3A Division II.

Brady will visit Tolar, a state finalist from last year, next week. Early (1-7, 0-3) will host Eastland next week.

No. 8 Mason Pummels Holland to Take Control of District Race

The No. 8-ranked Mason Punchers clobbered Holland 61-15 in a surprising blowout.

Both teams were 6-1 overall and 2-0 in district heading into the matchup, so it looked like — on paper at least — that Holland might pose a threat to Mason's district winning streak that dates back to 2011.

Instead, Mason absolutely dominated the team that looked like its biggest competitor for the District 14-2A Division I title.

Sutten Silerio rushed for 207 yards and four TDs on only eight carries, while Carlton Schmidt had 149 yards and two TDs on seven carries.

Clancy Osbourn had two TD catches.

With its seventh straight win, Mason is now 7-1 overall and 3-0 in district. Holland fell to 6-2, 2-1.

Mason will host Johnson City next week. Holland will host San Saba.

Reagan County Tops Sonora in Low-Scoring Battle

Reagan County's defense led the way in a 20-7 win over Sonora.

Jarrett Brown led the Owls' offense with 22 carries for 156 yards and a TD. Chris Johnson added 10 carries for 94 yards and a TD.

Reagan County keeps rolling with a 7-1 overall record and a 3-0 mark in District 3-2A Division I. The Owls will host Colorado City next week.

Sonora dropped to 4-4, 1-2. The Broncos will be at home next week against Christoval.
