Cowboys to Sign Former Second Round Pick

DALLAS, TX— The Dallas Cowboys have signed a four-time Pro Bowl running back to their practice squad.

The Cowboys have signed former Minnesota Viking running back Dalvin Cook to their practice squad. Cook was meeting with the team on Monday and have now signed the 29-year-old veteran.

Cook played most of his career with the Vikings and was the 41st overall pick, the third back taken, in the 2017 NFL Draft. From 2019 to 2022, Cook had 4 one-thousand-yard seasons. He played for current Cowboy defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer while in Minnesota as well.

Last year however, Cook played for the New York Jets after he would not take a pay cut to stay with the Vikings. He saw action in 15 games but wasn’t the feature back as Breece Hall took the lion’s share of the carries. Cook and the Jets parted ways, and he found a home in Baltimore for the playoffs but has been a free agent since.

The Cowboys did nothing to inject any fresh blood in the running back room over the offseason. Reports were that they were interested in former Texas Longhorn Jonathan Brooks in the 2024 NFL Draft, but the Carolina Panthers traded up to pick the ball carrier in the second round.

Other than that, Dallas did sign Ezekiel Elliott and a couple of other veterans before training camp, who did not make the team after roster cuts. Besides Elliott and Cook, the Cowboys kept Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn.

The Dallas Cowboys open their season against the Cleveland Browns on September 8, 2024.
