FRISCO, TX—Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is officially in a holdout. He was reportedly absent for the start of the Cowboys’ mandatory minicamp, which began on Tuesday, June 4. Lamb is still awaiting a new contract, as several other receivers across the league have recently received new deals.
As expected, the Minnesota Vikings Justin Jefferson made a significant impact on the wider NFL receiver market by signing his new 4-year, $140 million deal with $110 million guaranteed on Monday. This makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.
Lamb, who came out of the University of Oklahoma in the same draft class as Jefferson, has put up almost identical numbers so far in both receivers’ careers. It's clear that Jefferson's deal has set a new standard, and Lamb is likely to expect a similar contract.
For missing Tuesday’s workout, Lamb will be fined by the NFL $16,953 and up to $50,855 if the Cowboys’ No. 1 WR misses all three days. There are still three big-name receivers without deals left in the NFL—Cincinnati Bengals' Ja’Marr Chase, Cowboys’ Lamb, and San Francisco 49ers' Brandon Ayiuk. Now that Jefferson has reset the WR market, those dominos could quickly fall into place in the coming weeks.
The Cowboys were in nearly the same situation back when Dez Bryant and Denver Broncos' Demaryius Thomas both signed their new contracts. Both pass catchers were at the top of their game and after one signed, the other signed shortly after.
Away from the Cowboys’ facility in Frisco, DallasCowboys.com reported that Lamb continues his offseason workouts. He is working with specialized trainers and his quarterback, Dak Prescott. Lamb has until late July to ink a new deal if he misses minicamp. The Cowboys meet for training camp in Oxnard, CA, at the end of July to prepare for the upcoming season.
