MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Dallas Mavericks are headed back to the NBA Finals for the first time since Dirk Nowitzki powered the Mavs past Lebron James and the Miami Heat in 2011. The Mavs blew out the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 5 of the NBA Western Conference finals on Thursday night, 124-103, to claim a 4-1 series victory.
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving lit up the scoreboard on Thursday night with 36 points a piece. It was the Doncic show early as the Eastern European star tallied 20 points in the first quarter alone to put the T-Wolves on their heels early.
Minnesota never recovered from the Mavs’ explosive first quarter just two days after saving their season with a victory in Game 4. Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves savior up to that point, looked to run out of gas in this contest. Kyrie Irving continued to build steam throughout the game and had a large impact in keeping Minnesota down 17 in the second half.
The Timberwolves surrendered with about three minutes left to play and the Mavericks coasted to a 124-103 victory. Doncic claimed the Magic Johson Trophy after the game for his MVP performance in the Western Conference Finals.
Dallas's next moves to the NBA Finals, where they will face off with the Boston Celtics in a best-of-four-game series beginning on Thursday, June 6, in Boston at 7:30 p.m.
