Belles Dominate; Rams Fall Against LCU

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State Rams and Belles hosted the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals and Lady Chaps at the Stephens Arena in the Junell Center on Thursday night, February 8. The ladies balled out in the early game, securing a dominant victory over LCU, while the Rams ran into a bit of a brick wall and lost in the end.

Behind the Belles’ “Big Three” (Madeline Stephens, Sawyer Lloyd, and Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant), Angelo State put out an excellent performance on Thursday night. The Rambelles jumped out to a hot start with a 6-0 run to open the contest. That lead shifted throughout the game, but the Belles never trailed on their way to a Lone Star Conference victory.

Stephens led the Belles in scoring with 20 points, followed by Lloyd with 13 and McGhee-Pleasant with 12. Angelo State plays again on Saturday when the Belles host West Texas A&M. Tip-off is at 1 p.m.

Angelo State had a disappointing night shooting the basketball in the loss. The Rams only managed 34% from the floor. Even worse, ASU shot 15% from beyond the arc. The looks were there, but the ball would not fall for the Rams as LCU experienced zero of those problems.

After a rough first half, ASU trailed 39-20. The Rams made a run to start the second half. ASU pulled within 14 points before an unfortunate series of events stymied the run. Kevon Godwin received a pass on the fast break off a steal, went up for a layup, and was blatantly fouled toward the basket. However, the referees must not have seen things the same way and did not call a foul. Everyone in the crowd, on the Rams’ bench, and even Coach Patel expressed their displeasure. One official took offense to the outburst and gave the bench a technical foul. Over the next few possessions, LCU scored eight unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

Angelo State never gave up and battled until the end. It wasn’t enough, and the Rams fell at home 75-50. Angelo State returns to action on Saturday, February 10, to face West Texas A&M. Tip-off is at 3 p.m.
