CHRISTOVAL— The Sterling City Eagles proved to be too much for the Christoval Cougars and won their second matchup, 50-28.
The Sterling City Eagles came into the game needing a win as they sat in third place in district with a record on 7-4 whereas the Christoval Cougars needed a win after dropping last Friday’s game to the Sonora Broncos and had a district record of 8-3, needing a win to get back on track before this Friday’s game against the 10-1 Reagan County Owls.
The refs were letting the teams play, maybe a little too much, and it certainly didn’t end without fireworks. Like the girl’s game, the first half was tough for both teams, but the Eagles went into halftime with the lead, 17-13. Sterling City’s Ty and Seth Turner scored all the first half points with five and 12 respectively.
Christoval only scored four points in the first quarter coming from Stanton McGlothlin and Ethan Busch. They ended up matching Sterling City in the second with two three-point shots, one each from McGlothlin and Camden Balderas. Busch and Gavin Balderas turned in two and one free throw.
Sterling City came out on a mission in the second half and scored more points in the third quarter than the entire first half with 19. Ty Turner picked up where Seth Turner left off, hitting one three-point shot, two two-pointers, and two free throws. Seth turned in three points, Rett Dickison hit two free throws, and Bradyon Pitcock sank two free throws and also a three-point shot. The Cougars’ McGlothlin had four points and Busch, Bruce Cooper, and Gavin Balderas had two each for a total of 10.
Into the fourth, the Eagles’ Ty Turner and Marquis Johnson each had six points and Pitcock and Seth Turner had one each. For the Cougars, Cooper had three points and Garrett Thompson had two.
The Sterling City Eagles came out of this one with a victory, 50-28, and tied the Cougars in district play at 8-4. Both teams have two dog fights ahead as the Eagles play Sonora this coming Friday and Reagan County next Tuesday and the Cougars play the Owls this Friday and Forsan next week.
This Forsan team is also 8-4 and do not underestimate the Sonora squad, they have lost four of their district games by a total of five points.
