"We Got Them Right Where We Want Them" Sonora Puts Together "The Drive" To Win Bi-District Playoff Game

SWEETWATER— The Sonora Broncos and the Denver Broncos have something in common and it isn’t just the mascots.

Denver and Sonora now have “The Drive” in common. In their bi-district playoff matchup, the Broncos got the ball with a little over five minutes left in the game, needing to drive nearly the length of the field, and score a touchdown and convert on the extra point to win against the Anson Tigers.

“We got them right where we want them.”

Sonora senior quarterback Jaime Buitron had that attitude when he stepped on the field with the Broncos down, 27-21. That seems to be Buitron’s default attitude as confidence is never lacking from the Bronco’s signal caller.

The Sonora Broncos did just that and running back Edgar DeLuna took a screen pass from Buitron down the Anson sideline and in for the touchdown with 2:06 remaining in the game. That tied the game up at 27-27 and Sonora head coach Blake Weston called for the two-point conversion.

The Broncos lined up and Buitron shovel passed the ball to DeLuna who banged it across the goal line for two. The Broncos now hold a 29-27 lead over the Tigers with just over two minutes left.

The defense, which had its work cut out for them all day as Anson did a tremendous job on second down and reverse plays, had to get a stop. The Broncos also had to keep the Tigers out of field goal range as well so there was no margin for error.

1:58 left in the game, on first down, Tiger’s quarterback Tyler Wilburn takes the snap and tries to scramble, something he had quite a bit of success with, only to run into big number 65, Elijah Samaniego, for a two-yard gain.

Now, there is only 1:33 left and the clock is running, Wilburn goes to throw the ball but pulls it down and Samaniego and Jacob Martinez are there to get the quick hit on Wilburn and take him down.

Time is continuing to run down and now on third down, Wilburn takes the snap and the Bronco’s pass rush was on, forcing an incompletion and the clock to stop.

With just about a minute left and on fourth down, Martinez does his thing at the snap and applies enough pressure to force Wilburn to throw another incompletion and the Broncos take over on downs with just about 35 seconds left in the game.

One Buitron kneel down and the game was over with the Broncos emerging victorious, 29-27.

Josh Lozano had a big game, and it wouldn’t be right to ignore the game Dylan Ford had when he scored a touchdown and had a huge interception. When asked what the message was for the rest of the playoffs, Ford had one thing to say:

“Watch out for us.”

The Sonora Broncos advance and will play the winner of Olton and Farwell in the second round of the Texas High School Playoffs.
