Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Talks Trey Lance Deal

FRISCO, TX — When the Dallas Cowboys acquired Trey Lance a week ago, the Cowboys’ current quarterback, Dak Prescott, was less than thrilled. Critics of Cowboys’ Owner Jerry Jones came out of the woodwork talking about Jones not talking to Head Coach Mike McCarthy or Prescott before the trade. Jones had to remind critics about how things worked in Dallas on Tuesday, September 5.

Many critics think that the Cowboys overpaid for Lance (4th-round pick), and still others say he should have at least informed the head coach and starting quarterback of the decision. Jones says that while he is making the final decision in deals like these, he isn’t the only voice in the room. He discussed his thoughts on the matter on Jones’s weekly appearance on 105.3 the Fan.

"The way we have it structured gets a lot of criticism," Jones said. "But with the way I'm involved and have all the ongoing information, I didn't have to fool around. I got it done. I didn't have to send it around. I can make that trade in five minutes."

While some people in the Cowboys’ organization may have wanted more of a heads-up, at the end of the day, it is Jerry’s decision to make. Jones said time-sensitive deals like the one with Trey Lance sometimes force his hand.

"I had everything at my fingertips," he said. "I didn't have to visit with anyone as to what we thought of Trey Lance because I knew it already. It's a continual thing. In our business, you have to be prepared to catch an opportunity. You can't wait to have a committee meeting over something like that, or else the train's gone."

The San Francisco 49ers gave up what amounts to three 1st-round draft picks for Lance. After injuries and other factors kept the North Dakota State stand-out off the field, the Cowboys now roll the dice. Jones obviously sees something in the young quarterback, and maybe Dallas can train up another serviceable backup to Dak Prescott.

"I want a team that will give us a chance again, and I think we've got that," Jones concluded.

The Dallas Cowboys open up the 2023 NFL season on Sunday Night Football on September 10 against the New York Giants at 7:20 p.m. on NBC.
