Sonora Broncos Look Sharp in Opening Scrimmage

SONORA— With the High School Football Season right around the corner, the Sonora Broncos are ready to make a state run.

The Broncos took on the Johnson City Eagles last night in Sonora in their first scrimmage of the season and they looked like a team that was ready to make a run. The defense was snuffing out run plays as the defensive front collapsed on the Eagle offense. Yes, Sonora did give up a big catch and run that turned into a touchdown but when the Broncos had the ball, they moved it extremely well.

One thing, Bronco quarterback Jaime Buitron did not play. He stood on the sidelines, dealing with an injury, and helping out the second-string quarterback, Juan Castillo, who looked pretty sharp.

At running back, Edgar DeLuna and Justin Lozano ran the ball with purpose and the offensive line looked experienced. That shouldn’t be a surprise as Elijah Samaniego leads the way at center.

The entire team moved the ball well and had plenty of younger players show sparks.

On the defensive side, DeLuna is dangerous and should keep offensive coordinators up at night. He makes it look easy and is simply one of the best defensive players in the Concho Valley. He finished last season with over 200 tackles on defense and 1,300 yards combined on offense.

The energy, the attitude, the way this Bronco team carried itself like a team on a mission.

“Job’s not done,” Samaniego said.

Under head coach Blake Weston, the Broncos are primed for a huge season and they’re prepared to take it all the way to AT&T Stadium.
