SAN ANTONIO, TX — The XFL hosts its inaugural championship game on Saturday, May 13, at 7 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The XFL made a statement about their choice of location for the inaugural title game. The ownership group of Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson, and Gerry Cardinale of RedBird Capital made the announcement before the San Antonio Brahmas' first home game against the St. Louis Battle Hawks back in February.
"We are thrilled to announce that San Antonio and the Alamodome will be the host of this season’s inaugural Championship Game," said Dany Garcia, Chairwoman and Owner. “I have been so impressed by the level of enthusiasm and commitment from the fans in San Antonio. We can't wait to bring together the best of the XFL North and XFL South to compete for the Championship title in an event that will celebrate our players, coaches, and the revival of professional football in San Antonio."
“Our inaugural XFL season is officially rolling with our eight teams showing out and representing the passionate fans of their cities,” said Dwayne Johnson, Owner. “From now through May, our athletes have their eyes set on the Championship game, and we’re pumped to bring this historic event to the Alamodome. Plus, on a very personal note, I started my wrestling career in San Antonio, specifically at the Alamodome. This was my very first Royal Rumble. The city, the fans - San Antonio and the state of Texas helped shape my career.”
After a successful rebranding and opening season for the XFL, the season comes to an end on Saturday when the one-loss D.C. Defenders try to cap off their incredible season with a final victory over the Arlington Renegades. D.C. defeated the Seattle Seadragons in the Semifinal last week, while the Renegades beat the Houston Roughnecks.
The Defenders are heavy favorites this weekend after Arlington upset Houston in the semi-finals. Arlington finished the year with a 4-6 overall record and barely snuck into the playoffs. D.C. finished their season on a high note and continue to dominate their opponents. The Defenders outgained the Renegades by almost 1,000 yards of total offense this season. They had 2,035 yards through the air and 1,408 yards on the ground. D.C. outgained every other team in the XFL in total offense other than the Seattle Sea Dragons.
The Renegades need to find a way to stop D.C.’s run game on Saturday if they hope to pull off another upset. XFL’s best and ex-Baylor Bear, Abram Smith, leads the Defender's deadly rushing attack. The Abilene High graduate accumulated 791 rushing yards this season, averaging an impressive 5.0 yards per carry. He was far and away the most productive running back this season, with the next closest 348 yards behind Smith.
