CINCINNATI, OH — Buffalo Bills’ Safety Damar Hamlin was discharged from the Intensive Care Unit and transferred to a hospital in Buffalo, New York, on Monday, Jan. 10. This news came from Dr. William Knight IV and Dr. Timothy Pritts at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center who helped treat Hamlin after his cardiac arrest during the Bills and Bengals Monday Night Football matchup.
One week after Hamlin collapsed unconscious and medical personnel administered CPR on the field, Hamlin flew from Cincinnati to Buffalo and entered the Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute. He will continue to receive treatment as he recovers there.
"He is currently listed in stable condition and continues to make significant progress in his recovery," the hospital said in a statement. "The goal of the transfer to Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute is to get him closer to home for further evaluation, recovery, and eventually discharge and rehabilitation."
His doctors say that he continues to meet important milestones on his road to recovery, participating in physical therapy, walking around the unit, and tolerating a normal diet.
Hamlin watched the Buffalo Bills play their Week 18 matchup against the New England Patriots last Sunday. Dr. Pitts shared Hamlin’s reaction to watching his team.
"He watched the game yesterday. When the opening kickoff was run back, he jumped up and down, got out of his chair, and set, I think, every alarm off in the ICU in the process, but he was fine; it was just an appropriate reaction to a very exciting play," Pritts said. "So, he very much enjoyed it and enjoys the support from everyone."
The rest of the football world continues to show adamant support for the young man, with multiple organizations changing their color scheme to fit the Buffalo Bills, using Hamlin’s number 3 on jerseys and websites, and donating to his charity.
After receiving the news at practice last Friday that Hamlin woke up from his sedation, the Buffalo Bills reacted with pure joy and elation. The team dedicated the game to their teammate and brought home a victory over the Patriots on Sunday. With the win, the Buffalo Bills secured the No. 2 overall seed in the 2022 AFC playoffs and will host their division rival, the Miami Dolphins, on Sunday, Jan. 15, at noon.
