AUSTIN—The University of Texas has fired Chris Beard after he was arrested on assault charges in early December.
On December 12, 2022, Beard was arrested after he assaulted his girlfriend. According to the affidavit, the woman told officers that she and Beard had gotten into a argument where she broke his glasses and Beard “snapped”. Beard allegedly choked, bit, and threw the victim around.
Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement, “The University of Texas has parted ways with Chris Beard. This has been a difficult situation that we’ve been diligently working through. Today, I informed Mr. Beard of our decision to terminate him effectively immediately.”
Beard is known across the Concho Valley, Big Country, and South Plains has he has had coaching stops at Angelo State, McMurray, and Texas Tech.
Due to being fired for cause, Beard will not be receiving any salary or money from his seven-year, $35 million contract. Texas did suspend Beard without pay indefinitely on December 12.
