AUSTIN, TX — Head Basketball coach of the Texas Longhorns, Chris Beard, was arrested in Travis County on Monday morning on a 3rd-degree felony domestic violence charge.
Beard was arrested on Dec 12 at around 4 a.m. for assault on a family/household member by impeding breath circulation. He was taken to Travis county jail and remained in the jail without a bond listed.
Texas put out a statement on the situation. "The University is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard. We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal process," they said.
Chris Beard is a former coach of the Angelo State University Men's Basketball Team. In the two years he coached the Rams, he posted a 47-15 record. He also helped the Rams reach their first Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament.
Texas Tech University hired Beard in 2016 to turn around its program. Tech fell on hard times after Legendary coach Bobby Knight left, and the Red Raiders had not seen the Big Dance in March since. Beard helped lead Texas Tech to its first Big 12 title in 2019 and then its first National Title appearance later that year.
Beard left Texas Tech in 2021 to coach at the University of Texas. Beard has the Longhorns off to a hot start in the 2022 season, climbing the college basketball ranks to no. 2 in the nation before falling to the University of Illinois on Dec. 6. It is unclear what Beard's future at Texas looks like after his arrest.
