AL RAYYAN, QATAR – The 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals kicked off on Friday, Dec. 9, between Croatia and the favorites to win it all, Brazil. Croatia continued its impeccable run by defeating the Brazilians after regulation ended tied 0-0, in penalties 1-1 (4-2)
Neymar scored in the first half of extra time in the 106’ to break the match-long deadlock and put Brazil up 1-0. He drove through the center of the box before he poked the ball to the right and beat Croatia Goal Keeper Dominic Livakovic with a strong finish.
Neymar’s goal seemed like it was all the Brazilians needed to advance, but lackluster defending from then on spelled their doom. In the 117’ minute, Bruno Petkovic rocketed a deflected shot in the back of the net to pull Croatia even with Brazil. It was Croatia’s first shot on goal all day.
Extra time ended with the score still tied, so both teams squared off for a penalty shootout. All four of Croatia’s shooters found the back of the net, while Brazil only managed two. Brazil’s final shot went off the crossbar, and Croatia defeated Brazil 1-1 (4-2).
Neymar’s extra-time goal timed him with Brazilian great Pele, for the most goals by a Brazilian all-time with 77.
Croatia moves on to the semifinals against the winner of Argentina and the Netherlands on Monday, Dec. 13, at 1 p.m.
