SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Central Bobcats boys basketball team (5-0) hosted the Midland Christian Mustangs (8-4) in San Angelo Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The ‘Cats trailed by four points at halftime but turned the game around in the 2nd half. Smothering defense and several fast break opportunities helped the Bobcats put the Mustangs away, 54-44.
The ‘Cats got out to a hot start and led by three points at the end of the 1st quarter, 14-11. The shots stopped falling in the 2nd quarter, and several made threes by the Mustangs put the Bobcats down by four at the break, 27-23.
Head Coach CJ Villegas must have fired up his team in the locker room because they looked completely different in the 2nd half. Jacoby Yates, Christian English, and Jaedyn Gipson all hit several threes, and the ‘Cats quickly retook the lead.
Defensively, the Bobcats suffocated the Mustangs in the 2nd half. Kollin Allbright dominated the paint, blocking shots, Jacob English used his speed to poke away several different passes, and Jacob Sanchez stopped the Mustangs from driving the lane. Central outscored Midland Christian in the 2nd half, 31-17.
Central pulled further and further away as the 4th quarter ended, and the Bobcats stayed undefeated on the season, 54-44.
Jaedyn Gipson led the Bobcats with 18 points. His 14 points in the 2nd half led the way for the ‘Cats to overcome their 4-point deficit at halftime. The Mustangs had no answer for him inside, and the fouls he drew put the ‘Cats at the line several times at the end of the game.
Christian English followed close behind with 14 points. The sophomore continues to improve his game week to week. He is not afraid to shoot the ball, either. Although he went 3-9 from the field, two of those shots were threes. English also went 6-6 from the line.
The JV team beat the Mustangs 43-41
The Freshman team also beat the Mustangs 72-23
The San Angelo Central Bobcats (5-0) host the Doug McCutchen Memorial Tournament this weekend, Dec. 1-3. The ‘Cats first game is Thursday, Dec. 1, against Fort Worth Benbrook at 1:30 p.m.
