SAN ANGELO, TX — The decades’ old tradition at all San Angelo Central Bobcat football games is the running of three flags, each with separate words, “Sic,” “Em,” and “Cats.” The flags promote spirit and are used to celebrate scores. Every score features three flag bearers running the length of the Bobcat side of the stadium. At the Killeen Shoemaker game Friday night, the flag bearers were missing the third flag that read “Cats.”
Jaden Walls, a junior, has been assigned to flag duty for the past two years said the “Cats” flag came up missing between the school years. Also missing from Walls’ unit are the Texas and U.S. flags. The custodians for the flags, and where Mr. Walls is a member, is the Texas 936 Air Force Junior ROTC.
The unit attached to Central High School serves as a rather rowdy cheering section for the Bobcats at most sporting events. The JROTC unit also deploys the tunnel that the Bobcats football team runs through and onto the field before kickoff and after halftime.
Kathleen Price is an instructor for the JROTC unit. She said the Central JROTC program currently has 114 members.
We conducted a quick sourcing search for spirit flags and believe all three of the flags can be replaced for less than $1,000.
