BALLINGER, TX — The Cougars defense came up clutch in their first round game and stopped three Cross Plains' drives dead in their tracks with interceptions, two of which were returned 60 and 100+ yards for touchdowns.
The two pick sixes proved the be the difference with the final score being 28-14. Junior quarterback Brayden Wilcox sat out the first quarter, but returned in the second and provided the energy Christoval needed to outrun the Buffaloes.
Sophophore Beau Jolly had two touchdowns to go along with two interceptions. The second pick was caught in the end zone after Cross Plains had marched the length of the field and were inside the 5. He returned it 100+ yards to the other end zone. His first touchdown was an 8 yard screen in the second quarter to tie the game at 7.
Wilcox had the other two scores. The first was a 30 yard scramble to go up 14-7. The second was a 60 yard pick six that extended the lead to 14 in the second half. You can read a full recap here.
Christoval will now play Wellington next week. The Skyrockets are 10-1, ranked #5, and outright champions of the 5-2A DII district. They defeated Electra 56-12 Thursday night in Childress.
