AREA BASEBALL: Baronet Leads Brady Past Sonora

SONORA, TX -- The Brady Bulldogs downed the Sonora Broncos 10-7 in a District 4-3A rematch on Friday thanks to a big sixth inning. 

Brady fell behind 4-3 after the first inning before clawing back to tie the game in the third and take a short lead in the fifth before Sonora tied it up again. 

“Stay focused and play baseball,” was the message Brady head coach Rocky Bernal had for his team. “I have a good group of juniors who play like they're seniors. But I tell them to stay focused. We are here to play baseball.”

Kasen Baronet lit a flame for Brady with his RBI single early in sixth inning. He would finish the game 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Three batters later, Marshall Schmitz roped an RBI double to right center field for the Bulldogs. Brady tallied four runs in the inning to go up 10-6. 

Brady held Sonora to only one run at the bottom of the sixth. 

Cutter Johnson was 1-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs and Walker Bauer was 3-for-3 with an RBI and four runs scored.

Levi Garrett led the way for Sonora, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Baronet also picked up the win on the hill after going 5.2 innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits and one walk with 11 strikeouts. Caleb Galindo picked up the save after striking out the final four batters.

Taking the loss for Sonora was Daniel Gonzales. He allowed 10 runs on 11 hits and four walks with four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work.

Brady (12-10-1, 6-3) will go on to play Grape Creek in Brady on Tuesday with a chance to clinch a playoff berth. Sonora (12-7, 4-6) hosts Grape Creek on April 18, needing to win their final two games to clinch a playoff berth.

No. 1 Wall Continues Dominant Streak to Set up Title Bout Next Week

Two home runs in the top of the second inning and more dominant pitching helped the no. 1-ranked Wall Hawks keep their unbeaten run alive in a 10-0 win over Ballinger in five innings on Friday.

Charlie Mascorro led off the inning with a solo shot to center field and Tanner Seider capped off the four-run inning with a solo shot of his own to put Wall up 5-0 after the inning.

Wall would tack on five more runs in the fourth inning to cap off their dominant night offensively.

Jake Jansa was the only Hawk to pick up multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Along with Seider and Mascorro, Jansa was one of five Hawks to pick up an RBI in the win.

Sutton Hurst kept Ballinger at bay by allowing just four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in five innings for the winning decision.

Tyler Vaughn, Jon Marcon, Kenedy Byler and Bradyn Bowman each had one hit to their name.

Byler took the loss after allowing 10 runs on 10 hits with four walks and five strikeouts in four innings of work.

Wall (25-0, 10-0) will host Reagan County next Tuesday for the District 4-3A title. Ballinger (6-16, 3-6) will travel to TLCA on Tuesday.
