Gov. Abbott Requests Review of School District Spending Across Texas
By Ryan Chadwick,
AUSTIN, TX — Gov. Greg Abbott has requested that Texas Comptroller Don Huffines conduct formal reviews of local independent school district finances to determine whether taxpayer dollars are being used for their intended purposes.
Abbott said the reviews are intended to ensure state funding is directed toward classrooms, teachers and students rather than administrative costs.
“As Texas makes historic investments in public education, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that taxpayer dollars directly reach students, classrooms, and teachers, rather than central-office growth, administrative bloat, consultants, and the web of noninstructional bureaucracy,” Abbott said.
The governor said Texans expect public education funding to be spent in compliance with state law and for its intended purpose.
“It is essential that the $104.9 billion of taxpayer funds spent on K-12 education is used for its intended purpose: supporting students and teachers to make Texas the top-performing state in education, rather than accelerating administrative bloat,” Abbott said.
Abbott has asked the comptroller to review the finances of up to four independent school districts of varying sizes and geographic locations. According to the governor's office, the reviews will examine whether public funds are being used for lawful and intended purposes.
The governor requested that Huffines submit a final report by Dec. 31, 2026, so lawmakers can consider any recommended reforms during the 90th Texas Legislature.
