SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo City Council voted 5-1 Tuesday to approve wastewater discharge regulations for any future data centers in the city, but tabled a proposed water-use ordinance after a tie vote left the issue unresolved.
The council took the action during a public hearing on ordinances first presented on May 19. Members had unanimously voted then to hold a second hearing, which occurred during the regular meeting on June 2.
The water-use ordinance failed to pass because the seven-member council was short one member, resulting in a tie that could not be broken.
After a brief recess to consult with the city’s legal team on the implications of a tied vote, the council voted to table the water-use ordinance until its next meeting on June 16.
Several residents spoke against both the water-use regulations and a possible data center development involving Skybox Datacenters and Emergent Data Centers.
With the wastewater discharge rules now approved — along with previously adopted land-use regulations — Thompson said the city has imposed some of the strictest standards in the nation on future data center projects.
