State Gas Price Average Jumps 19 Cents as Some Cities Near $4 a Gallon

SAN ANGELO, TX - The statewide gas price average in Texas is $3.80 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.

That price is 19 cents more when compared to this day last week and is 96 cents more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Texas, drivers in El Paso are paying the most on average at $3.91 per gallon while drivers in the Amarillo area are paying the least at $3.27 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $4.08, which is 10 cents more when compared to this day last week and 84 cents more when compared to this day last year.

In San Angelo, the average price for a gallon of gas is currently sitting at $3.87, which is a one-cent increase from a week ago, and a one-dollar increase from this time last year. The highest gas prices ever recorded in San Angelo were back in June of 2022, when gas prices were sitting at $4.48.

Gas prices continue to climb across Texas and the nation as instability in global energy markets pushes crude oil prices higher. Heightened tensions in the Middle East and concerns about possible supply disruptions through key shipping routes have added upward pressure to crude oil, which remains the biggest factor in what drivers pay at the pump.

While current pump prices are the highest Texas drivers have seen since 2022, the statewide average remains well below the record high of $4.70 per gallon set on June 15, 2022. With some metro areas inching closer to the $4 mark, drivers may want to plan for somewhat higher fuel costs for spring road trips and everyday travel. Because geopolitical tensions continue to create uncertainty in the global oil market, it’s difficult to know how long this upward pressure at the pump may last.

“Drivers across Texas are continuing to see gas prices move higher, and the main reason is the rising cost of crude oil,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas. “With spring road trip season underway, now is a good time for drivers to build higher fuel costs into their travel budgets. The AAA Gas Cost Calculatorcan help motorists estimate fuel expenses before they hit the road and make it easier to plan ahead.”

AAA Fuel Saving Tips

  • Slow down. Gas mileage usually drops at higher highway speeds.
  • Don’t idle too long. If you’ll be stopped for more than a minute, shut the engine off when it’s safe.
  • Use the right fuel. If your car only recommends regular, paying for premium won’t save gas.
  • Lighten the load. Extra weight in your vehicle can hurt fuel economy.
  • Check your tire pressure. Properly inflated tires can help you save gas.
  • Plan your route ahead of time to avoid extra driving and unnecessary stops.
  • Use AAA tools like TripTik and the AAA Gas Cost Calculator to map your trip and estimate fuel costs.
  • Look for fuel rewards. AAA members can save at participating gas stations by signing up for Shell Fuel Rewards®. Members who register now through April 30 will get 35¢/gallon off their first fill at participating Shell stations, and all AAA Fuel Rewards members will save 10¢/gallon during that time period.
