Storage Unit Fire Destroys San Angelo Mechanic’s Business

SAN ANGELO, TX — A structure fire at a storage facility on Knickerbocker Road destroyed a local mechanic’s business last Friday.

Fire crews were dispatched around 2:30 p.m. to the 7000 block of Knickerbocker Road, across from Mathis Field Airport, for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, responders found three storage units fully involved, with two additional units threatened by the flames. That's according to a statement from the Dove Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

An engine from the San Angelo Fire Department responded for mutual aid, followed shortly by Dove Creek Engine 507. Firefighters initiated a fast attack, and additional assistance was requested from the Wall Volunteer Fire Department and the Christoval Volunteer Fire Department. The fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

According to Matt Stone, owner of Mechanical Solutions, some of the storage units involved belonged to his business. Stone said the fire destroyed all of his tools and equipment, leaving him unable to operate.

Stone, a small-engine and equipment mechanic who serves customers across San Angelo, has since started a GoFundMe fundraiser seeking assistance to replace what was lost in the fire. As of this Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised $225 toward a $35,000 goal.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
