SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Apostolic Church was destroyed in a fire early Sunday, Oct. 5, leaving the building and its contents a total loss, according to a GoFundMe page launched to assist with rebuilding efforts.
The fundraiser, organized by Miranda Smith, states that Pastor Gregg Wilcox and his wife were notified around 5 a.m. by the fire department that their church was engulfed in flames. The couple had returned home from a youth rally in North Texas only two hours earlier.
According to the post, the church’s insurance had recently lapsed due to the age of the building. Smith wrote that the congregation had also experienced recent vandalism, and some members suspect arson as a possible cause. One responding police officer reportedly described the incident as a “cultural religious attack.”
"They were so excited and expecting visitors in service this morning, so they were hurrying back to be ready for Sunday church," information states.
The GoFundMe campaign, titled “Rebuild San Angelo Apostolic Church,” has raised more than $3,000 toward its $100,000 goal as of Tuesday morning. The funds will go toward rebuilding the church and replacing lost equipment and furnishings.
Smith encouraged the community to contribute and share the fundraiser link, writing, “When one of us hurt, we all hurt.”
