SAN ANGELO, TX — The Railroad Commission of Texas issued 560 original drilling permits in August 2025, including 482 to drill new oil or gas wells, according to data released by the agency.
The permits included 106 for oil, 52 for gas, 367 for oil and gas, 24 for injection, two for service, and six for other well types. The commission also approved eight reentries of plugged wellbores, six field transfers, 63 re-completions, and one reclass.
In total, staff processed 1,223 oil completions, 340 gas completions, and 130 injection completions statewide during the month.
By district, Midland led the state with 224 new drilling permits, followed by the San Angelo area with 61 and the Refugio area with 43. Midland also reported the highest number of completions, with 420 oil and 104 gas. The San Angelo area recorded 120 new oil completions and one gas completion.
Other areas with notable activity included the San Antonio area, which had 36 permits and 61 oil completions, and the Refugio area, which had 78 oil and 30 gas completions.
