SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo’s confirmed flood fatality has been identified as Tanya Burwick, 62, a longtime employee of the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Sherwood Way, according to city officials and a statement from her workplace.
Burwick was reported missing on July 4 after her SUV was swept away in rapidly rising floodwaters near Bell Street between Coke and Lowry streets, police said. Her vehicle was later found submerged and unoccupied. Crews searched into the evening but were forced to suspend operations due to dangerous conditions.
Police said Burwick’s body was discovered around 9:15 a.m. on July 5, several blocks away from where her SUV had been located.
“This is nothing short of a miracle that we only have one fatality, given the amount of homes washed off foundations and the speed of this flooding,” said Police Chief Travis Griffith. “My heart and prayers are with the family of the deceased.”
On Saturday, Walmart Neighborhood Market San Angelo – Sherwood Way shared a tribute on social media, calling Burwick “sweet Mrs. Tanya” and describing her as a dedicated employee who had worked at the store since it opened in 2015.
“Her dedication, warmth, and spirit touched so many of us over the years,” the post read. “She will be truly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing and working with her. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. We will honor her memory and the many ways she has helped shape our store, our team, and our Walmart Family."
Aside from Burwick’s death, officials have reported only minor, non-life-threatening injuries from the flooding.
The city estimates more than 12,100 structures have been affected by floodwaters as damage assessments continue.
