SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo City Council has approved a resolution supporting private fundraising efforts to install shade structures at city parks, beginning with Webster Park’s tot lot playground.
The proposal, led by the San Angelo Mommy & Me Play Group, aims to improve park accessibility and comfort during high temperatures by installing durable and aesthetically pleasing shade coverings. The initiative aligns with the city’s 2020 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, in which the addition of shade structures was ranked as the second-highest priority for park facility improvements, following splash pads.
The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board reviewed and endorsed the fundraising proposal following discussions with city staff and the community group. The group selected Webster Park as the starting point due to its high usage and existing infrastructure. Although the current equipment is in good condition, refurbishment is also included in the plan.
Funds raised for the project will be managed by the San Angelo Parks Foundation and transferred to the city for implementation. The estimated cost for the shade structure at Webster Park is up to $25,000, though organizers will aim to reduce expenses. Long-term maintenance will be handled by the city, with estimated annual upkeep of about $200. The shade material is estimated to last 8-10 years, while the posts and cables should last at least 30 years.
If successful, the group hopes to expand shade efforts to other playgrounds, including Brentwood and Brown parks.
The resolution authorizes fundraising, project implementation, and ongoing maintenance support from the City of San Angelo.
