SAN ANGELO, TX — Joe Self was officially sworn in Tuesday morning as the new single-member District 2 representative on the San Angelo City Council, following his victory in the June 7 runoff election.
The swearing-in took place during an 8:30 a.m. meeting at the McNease Convention Center, where councilmembers also canvassed and declared the results of the runoff election. Self joins newly elected Mayor Tom Thompson and councilmembers Patrick Keely and Mary Coffey on the city’s governing body, alongside existing members Tommy Hiebert, Karen Hesse Smith, and Harry Thomas.
Self will serve a four-year term ending in May 2029.
The runoff was necessary after neither Self nor opponent Dudra Butler secured a majority vote in the May 3 election. In the runoff, Self received 299 votes, or 60.53% of the total, while Butler garnered 195 votes, or 39.47%, according to the Tom Green County Elections Office.
In the initial May 3 election, Self led with 485 votes (37.83%), followed by Butler with 432 votes (33.7%) and candidate John Bariou with 365 votes (28.47%).
During the ceremony, Councilmember Tommy Hiebert reflected on a personal connection, noting he served with Self’s father, Marty Self, on City Council from 1990 to 1994. Hiebert said their time on council marked the beginning of a 35-year friendship.
“City Council’s good for a lot of things, and probably not so good for some things, but one of the good things that has come from City Council for me was a long-term friendship,” Hiebert said.
Mayor Thompson welcomed Self, saying, “It’s been a process to get here, and we’re going to come full circle, have a full group and a full team shortly.”
Self concluded with a comment on the quality of the campaign. “Dudra, you and John, I commend y’all both for doing this and doing this in a process that was great for all of us,” he said.
