SAN ANGELO, TX — A new outreach effort aimed at empowering rural Texans will officially launch in San Angelo with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Citizens’ Center Rural First Initiative, scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, June 12, at Firefighters Memorial City Park, 315 E. Twohig Ave.
The Citizen Center’s Rural First Initiative is a mobile outreach program designed to bring listening sessions, resource navigation, and leadership training to rural, urban, and tribal communities across Texas. The program is backed by Common Defense and features mobile units that engage residents, identify local needs, and build long-term leadership capacity.
The initiative focuses on a grassroots model to build trust and connection through “Fireside Chats”—community-centered discussions with no formal agenda, where participants are encouraged to share local concerns and ideas. The chats are recorded, with insights shared back with local leaders to inform planning and solutions.
Each stop is supported by a three-person mobile team who train local residents to lead their own community conversations. Sessions typically cost about $500 and include advertising, equipment, and temporary space if needed.
The San Angelo launch marks the beginning of what organizers hope will be a statewide network of locally driven civic engagement.
