SAN ANGELO, TX — The newest member of San Angelo’s flock of fiberglass sheep was unveiled Thursday at the Chicken Farm Art Center, 2505 Martin Luther King Dr.
Ms. Bea ‘EWE’ Tiful, painted by local artist Crystal Goodman, is part of Downtown San Angelo Inc.’s Sheeptacular fundraising art project, which includes over 140 sheep around the city and even in some neighboring towns.
The new sheep was adorned in wildflowers, butterflies and hummingbirds with a West Texas sky as a backdrop.
A tire on one of her legs symbolized Keep San Angelo Beautiful’s effort to recycle over 30,000 tires the past five years.
Ms. Bea ‘EWE’ Tiful was actually one of San Angelo’s original sheep in 2007. Goodman also painted her then and was happy to give her a makeover 18 years later after the sheep was vandalized.
“She was deteriorating pretty bad, but luckily we got her in time, and we were able to fix all those little bruises on her and brought her back to life,” Goodman said.
Monica Ramos, the executive director for Downtown San Angelo, Inc., also spoke at the ceremony.
“When we started out in 2007 with 10 sheep, we never thought the Sheep Spectacular would grow to be over 140 sheep that have been sponsored,” Ramos said. “I’m so excited for this opportunity for artists to showcase their talents, and that we’re able to showcase this tribute to San Angelo and its history and the sheep and ranching industry.”
Charlotte Anderson, the executive director for Keep San Angelo Beautiful, said the sheep depicts the organization’s work in the community, particularly in beautification.
“Last year, we had 206 activities and events, we worked with 1,500 volunteers, (gave) over $156,000 in labor to the city in beautification and trash pickups, and we’re proud of our work,” said Anderson, who is retiring Tuesday. “We’re also proud just to highlight a little bit of what San Angelo should always look at. And we hope that we can all remember to pledge to be litter-free and change the environment when and where you can, and to continue to work with our citizens and our children in planting seeds for a sustainable tomorrow.”
