SAN ANGELO, TX – The San Angelo City Council will discuss a resolution to deny Atmos Energy’s proposed rate increase during its regular meeting on Jan. 7 at the McNease Convention Center.
Atmos Energy filed a request on Dec. 16, 2024, to raise base rate revenues by $16.73 million for its Mid-Tex Division. The proposal represents a 7.08% increase in annual revenue, including gas costs, and 11.51% excluding gas costs. If approved, the changes would take effect on Jan. 20, raising the average residential bill by $7.91 per month, or 9.41%, including gas costs.
If adopted, the resolution would deny the rate increase and authorize Herrera Law & Associates, PLLC, to represent the city in related legal proceedings. City officials recommend denying the proposal to prompt an appeal by Atmos Energy to the Railroad Commission of Texas, ensuring San Angelo remains involved in the regulatory process and has a voice in the final decision.
This marks Atmos’s first attempt to raise base rates since 2018. Over the years, the company has used six Interim Rate Adjustments to increase rates incrementally.
City leaders must act by Jan. 20; otherwise, the increase will automatically take effect.
The council’s agenda also includes discussions on property purchases, infrastructure contracts, and board nominations.
