SAN ANGELO, TX - Monday, Oct. 14, 2024, marks Columbus Day, a federal holiday observed in the U.S. It is also recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day in some states.
The federal holiday itself is for Columbus Day. But as attention has shifted to Columbus' life and the alleged cruel behavior toward native people who lived in the land that would later become the United States, several states have backtracked on celebrating Columbus Day. Instead, they created a new holiday on the same day that honors those native people.
As it is a federal holiday, various services and offices will be closed or have limited hours.
Banks, including major institutions such as US Bank, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Citibank, will be closed on Columbus Day. However, Chase Bank and TD Bank will remain open. While brick-and-mortar banks will shut their doors, online banking and ATM services will still be available. The U.S. stock market will stay open.
Federal government offices, including federal courts and the U.S. Postal Service, will be closed. Mail delivery will be paused for the day, although services like UPS and FedEx will be operational with possible delays due to the holiday. State and local government offices will largely follow suit, though some may operate with limited hours or remain open. It’s recommended to verify with local offices before heading out.
Retail stores like Target, Walmart, HEB, and CVS will continue regular business hours, and grocery stores will be open for shopping. Still, customers are advised to check specific locations for reduced hours.
With 11 annual paid federal holidays in 2024, this holiday falls alongside others such as Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. In 2025, federal workers will have a 12th holiday, Inauguration Day, which coincides with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and only occurs once every four years.
