SAN ANGELO, TX—As San Angeloans celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, it is important to remember why we set up the grill, spend time outside, and spend time with our families. To all of our American Patriots who have fallen throughout our nation's history, today, we honor and salute you.
For anyone who does not know the history, Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring and remembering the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Observed on the last Monday of May, this day is marked by various ceremonies and traditions that reflect the nation's gratitude and respect for its fallen heroes. Understanding the importance of Memorial Day involves exploring its historical origins, the ways it is celebrated, and its enduring significance in American culture.
The origins of Memorial Day date back to the aftermath of the Civil War, a conflict that claimed more American lives than any other war in U.S. history. In the wake of this tremendous loss, communities began holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.
Officially, Memorial Day was established as Decoration Day by General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans. On May 30, 1868, Logan declared a nationwide day of remembrance, during which Americans would decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. Over time, the observance evolved to honor all Americans who died in military service, and the name was changed to Memorial Day. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday on the last Monday of May each year.
In addition to a day off from work to be outside and spend time with their families, countless other Americans visit cemeteries and memorials or attend parades and ceremonies held throughout the country. So, for those off of work today, reach out to your loved ones, especially the ones in the armed services, and tell them that you appreciate them. Memorial Day is a sad day for some, but a great opportunity for all of us to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for all Americans who enjoy the freedoms of the greatest country in the world.
