WATCH: City Bulldozing Homeless Camp After Complaints

SAN ANGELO, TX - The City of San Angelo currently has crews clearing out the “tent city” homeless camp after complaints about trash and overgrown vegetation from neighbors.

At 7 a.m. today, May 6, the properties' abatement between 14th and West 11th streets off Bryant Boulevard began.

The City of San Angelo currently has crews, police officers, and heavy equipment at tent city.

According to information from the city, the abatement was originally planned for April, but plans were hindered due to weather and postponed to early May. This cleaning process is expected to take about a week and a half.

The information also states that the properties at these locations violate the city code for tall grass and weeds, junk, and “unsightly material.”

The Code Compliance Division responded to complaints and notified the owners of the violations.

“The city will now abate the properties for non-compliance, which is the standard operating procedure for this type of situation,” information stated. “The city has been working closely throughout this entire process with the local homeless coalition, which has assisted in alerting those living on the properties of the upcoming abatement.”

The city also states that individuals will not be allowed to interfere with the crews while they perform the abatement.

The homeless coalition and San Angelo Police Department are on-site during the abatement to assist as needed.

It was also said that the local homeless coalition has identified funding to temporarily house homeless individuals being asked to relocate. The coalition is also working on a long-term solution.

Information from the Concho Valley Homeless Planning Coalition states that on May 27th, crews will begin to clear out camps along the river up to Kirby Park.

According to CVHPC, tomorrow, May 7, is San Angelo Gives 2024.

“We are asking you to consider working with us to find solutions to the homeless crisis in our community,” the information stated. “For years, CVHPC has coordinated efforts to meet the needs of our homeless neighbors, and this San Angelo Gives, we are asking you to join the fight.”
