San Angelo City Council Set to Fight $110 Million Electric Rate Hike

SAN ANGELO, TX — The City Council of San Angelo will hold a regular meeting on March 19 at the McNease Convention Center's South Meeting Room.

The council will address many items on the agenda that include potentially challenging AEP Texas on proposed rate increases.

High on the agenda is a resolution authorizing the city to suspend AEP Texas's proposed "Statement of Intent to Change Rates." If approved, San Angelo would collaborate with other cities served by AEP Texas to hire legal counsel, intervening in PUC Docket No. 56165.

Information from the agenda states that AEP seeks to increase electric distribution rates by approximately $110.4 million per year and transmission rates by $63.1 million per year.

Other items for consideration include proclamations recognizing various community contributions and observances, such as declaring February 10, 2024, as San Angelo Federal Credit Union's 85th Anniversary, March 20, 2024, as Texas Small Business Development Center Day, and March 2024 as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

The consent agenda features routine business, including approval of previous meeting minutes, authorization for eviction proceedings for non-payment of annual rent at Lake Nasworthy Residential Lot, and procurement actions for city services and equipment.

Among regular agenda items, the council will review the Keep San Angelo Beautiful Annual Report for 2023, presented by KSAB Executive Director Charlotte Anderson, and consider zoning ordinance amendments affecting the Angelo Heights neighborhood.

The meeting, open to public commentary on non-agenda and agenda items, starts at 8:30 AM at 501 Rio Concho Drive, San Angelo, Texas.
