SAN ANGELO, TX — Buffalo Soldier Heritage Day will be celebrated at Fort Concho at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 25 with a presentation by Sherley Spears, at the Buffalo Soldier Memorial located next to the farmers market, 609 South Oakes St.
The program will move across the street to Fort Concho’s Barracks 1 Visitor Center for a book signing by San Antonio author Jim Matthews. Matthews recently wrote a new book on the Buffalo Soldier unit. Stop by to meet the author, enjoy refreshments, and view all the buffalo soldier displays.

The program is free to the public and co-hosted by Fort Concho and the NAACP Buffalo Soldier Memorial founder Sherley Spears.
Buffalo soldiers were Black soldiers of the regular Army who served mostly west of the Mississippi after the Civil War. Units of all four Buffalo Soldier regiments served at Fort Concho from 1869 to 1885. The 10th Cavalry, the most well-known Buffalo Soldier unit, had its headquarters at the fort from 1875 to 1882. For 22 years, while Fort Concho was active, the buffalo soldiers comprised half of the post’s enlisted men.
