San Angelo Police & Fire Depts. Joint Training

SAN ANGELO, TX - The San Angelo Police Department and the San Angelo Fire Department recently partnered to begin training both departments in the “Active Attack Integrated Response” (AAIR) training.

"Integrating police and fire training in the case of an active shooter is a crucial step towards ensuring the safety and security of our communities,” said San Angelo Police Chief Frank Carter.  “This collaborative approach allows for a more efficient and effective response, minimizing potential casualties and saving valuable time during critical situations. The combined expertise of both departments brings a comprehensive approach to handling emergencies, enabling quick and decisive action. By training together, we are better equipped to protect and serve our communities in times of crisis."

According to information released by the police department, this course is a continuation of the recently state-mandated "ALERRT" training.

SAPD began training all of our Officers in ALERRT-Level 1 in 2018.

The AAIR course is designed to improve integration between law enforcement, fire, telecommunication, and emergency medical services in active attack or shooter events.

The course provides law enforcement officers with key medical skills based on “Tactical Emergency Casualty Care” guidelines, which can be used at the “Point Of Injury”  to increase the survivability of victims.

The course also provides a model framework for law enforcement, fire, and EMS to integrate responses during an active attack/shooter event through the rescue task force concept.

This course has been designed to improve the safety and survivability of victims of active attack/shooter events and increase the effectiveness, coordination, and resource integration between law enforcement, fire, telecommunication, and EMS when responding to these events.

This two day course consists of classroom training, practical exercises as well as simulated scenarios.

Day one of the training was completed at the SAFD state-of-the-art training facility. Day two consisted of practicals at SAPD’s new "SIMMS shoot house."

The new SIMMS shoot house was constructed by SAPD SWAT team members with funds donated by San Angelo Back the Badge Organization.

“The Fire Department is excited to participate with this training collaboration with the Police Department,” said Chief Browdy of the San Angelo Fire Department. “Preparedness is a vital part of the survivability profile of our citizens and members. Joint training for an integrated response to active attacks better prepares both agencies and is a force multiplier in our respective specialties.”
