SAN ANGELO, TX - San Angelo native and football coach Sterlin Gilbert has been trending on social media for the last few days. A Facebook post created by Lake View High School shows Gilbert and another Lake View alumni and quarterback, John David Baker, posing with the trophy after winning the Peach Bowl against Penn State this year. Both are graduates of Lake View, and both coached for Ole Miss University. Baker was the Chiefs’ quarterback during the head coaching era of Sterlin Gilbert! Lake View highlighted their famous alumni in the post by saying, "Representing Lake View well." The Facebook post has been shared 132 times and has gone viral on a local level in San Angelo.
Gilbert was the quarterback's coach and passing-game coordinator for Ole Miss University but accepted a new position this offseason with the University of California as the Golden Bears' passing-game coordinator/quarterbacks coach. Gilbert attended Lake View High School in San Angelo, where he was the starting quarterback for the Chiefs. Gilbert also played for Angelo State University, earning recognition as a two-time All-Lone Star Conference quarterback, and spent time coaching at both Central and Lakeview high schools early in his coaching career.
Throughout his coaching career, he assumed roles as the offensive coordinator at various institutions, including Eastern Illinois University (2012-2013), Bowling Green State University (2014), the University of Tulsa (2015), the University of Texas at Austin (2016), and the University of South Florida (2017-2018).
Many locals remember Gilbert most from his time coaching at the University of Texas in Austin.
The 2023 season was Gilbert's first year coaching at Ole Miss and he experienced great success. After triumphing over Penn State in the Peach Bowl, the Rebels secured their inaugural 11-win season in the history of the program. This accomplishment marks the first time in 52 years that the Rebels concluded a season with two or fewer losses.
San Angeloan's and especially Lake View graduates will continue rooting for Gilbert and following his career in the coming years. Many hope that. Gilbert will eventually return to a head coaching position in Texas. Time will tell.
