SAN ANGELO, TX — Board Chair Marilyn Aboussie announced the San Angelo Health Foundation has awarded $669,415 to 19 nonprofit organizations. With the addition of these grants, 224 organizations and 801 projects have benefitted from Foundation funding since inception in the 1990s.
Grants Chair David Lupton said the following grants encompass community impact, health care, mental health, public safety and youth enrichment:
Galilee Community Development Corporation was awarded $300,000 to relocate their offices. Galilee’s mission is to develop affordable housing for low to middle income families of the Concho Valley. They have provided over 60 new single-family homes, have 36 rental homes available for low-income residents and a variety of assistance program to prevent homelessness.
Joseph Thomas Foundation was awarded $5,000 for the San Angelo Financial Assistance for Medically Fragile Children. They assist families with medically fragile children, particularly in rural communities, with medical supplies and equipment. The Foundation, established in 2008, has served 100 families with over $200,000 in support throughout Texas.
Keepers of Hope was awarded $25,000 for their Storage for Blessings project. Their mission is to support nonprofits and agencies that serve people in need. They locate, secure and deliver the items to the organization to benefit a client in need.
San Angelo Area Foundation was awarded $50,000 for the amplification and stretch fund for the San Angelo Gives program to be held in May 2021. This is a one day, 24-hour online fundraising effort to benefit local charities which generated $2.6 million in donations for 189 participating organizations this year.
San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo Association was awarded $25,000 towards the purchase of livestock pens. The pens will provide adequate social distancing for the young competitors during the 2021 livestock shows. The Association hosts 20 livestock shows and 11 contests in 18 days for more than 10,000 exhibitors.
Sterling County Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) was awarded $50,000 to purchase a water tanker truck and portable water tank. Officially organized in 1962, the VFD provides fire-fighting services, fire education and assists the EMS at accidents in a rural area consisting of 924 miles.
SUR Inc. was awarded $15,470 for repairs to their meeting facilities. The meeting facilities provide permanent locations for Alcoholics Anonymous and Al Anon meetings. The meeting space allows Alcoholics Anonymous groups to concentrate on their purpose of helping people stay sober instead of searching for meeting space.
West Texas Counseling & Guidance was awarded $168,945 to purchase an electronic health record system. West Texas Counseling and Guidance Center has been providing services to the Concho Valley since the 1970s. Over the last 40 years, they have provided mental health services to more than 70,000 men, women and children including those with low income or no insurance.
Unsolicited seasonal assistance grants for eleven organizations totaling $30,000 were also awarded for holiday programming needs to:
- Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council,
- Boys & Girls Club of San Angelo,
- Children’s Advocacy Center,
- Concho Valley Home for Girls/Children's Emergency Shelter,
- House of Faith,
- ICD Family Shelter,
- Early-Redwine Childcare Center,
- Salvation Army,
- Operation Blue Santa,
- San Angelo State Supported Living Center Volunteer Services Council, and
- West Texas Boys Ranch.
