Detained Subject Presents Object Emitting Strange Smell That Begins Hazmat Scare at San Angelo DPS Office

SAN ANGELO, TX — Today at around 1:30 p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Special Agents were conducting an interview with a subject at the San Angelo DPS Office.

While conducting the interview, the interviewee produced an unknown object that was emitting an unknown odor in front of the special agents. Due to the unknown nature and odor of the chemical, the agents followed proper protocol by sealing and securing the chemical substance in its location, closing all vents and turning off the air conditioning for the building.

The San Angelo Fire Department was contacted, and upon arrival at the DPS Office, the fire department battalion chief made the decision to evacuate all personnel as a precaution so that the substance could be safely removed from the office.

In order to remove the substance in the safest manner possible, the San Angelo Fire Department requested the assistance of the Goodfellow Air Force Base Hazmat Team.

The Goodfellow AFB team and the San Angelo Fire Department spent the rest of Friday at the scene assessing the building for contaminates.  DPS did not know at the time of this report if the incident presented a danger to those exposed.
