SAN ANGELO, TX – The effort to expand the YMCA's facility is well underway with the help of a $125,000 grant awarded by the Mary Ellen Kent Bunyard Family Foundation.
“We are grateful for the Mary Ellen Kent Bunyard Family Foundation’s commitment to this campaign,” said A.J. Moore, Executive Director of the YMCA of San Angelo. “Receiving their generous support has assisted us in starting out the new year strong.”
The YMCA has launched a capital campaign to raise $7.5 million to construct a second facility that will allow them to expand the services they provide for families in the community. “The Big Picture” campaign intends to raise funds to renovate the existing 11,000 square foot facility to accommodate the pre-school program and Y-Town.
The YMCA’s preschool program serves children ages 3-5 and currently accommodates 30 children but has an average waitlist of 75 children and a one-year wait. The new location will have the capacity to serve 72 children in preschool alone. Y-Town will be an interactive miniature city with themed activity rooms, such as a grocery store and construction site, for kids to learn through activities and play.
The YMCA will not turn anyone away due to their inability to pay for membership and program and will award scholarships to help with fees to join. In 2018, the YMCA granted over $338,713 in scholarship aid association-wide. The new location will also increase the daily capacity for day and summer camps.
The YMCA also plans to construct a new 12,000 square facility on a property they purchased at 2833 College Hills Blvd. The new facility will become a multi-use center that will feature an indoor playground, basketball court, and cafeteria. The new location will host day camps, afterschool programs, accommodate field trips, and will be available for rent for private parties and special events. The new location will increase the daily capacity for day and summer camps.
