San Angelo College Student in San Marcos Apartment Fire Presumed Dead

SAN ANGELO, TX — Tragic news from San Marcos hit the family of Brian and Michele Frizzell of San Angelo late Saturday evening. The fate of their daughter, Haley, is that she is presumed to have died in the fire. The news came out late Saturday but there are no official announcements that her body has been found in the debris left behind yet. She was the victim of an early Friday morning fire at the Iconic Village and Vintage Pad apartments located north of Texas State University there.

The 4:30 a.m. Friday morning fire is reported to have affected 100 apartment units and displaced 200 people who lived there. Flames were estimated to reach 40 feet in the air Friday morning according what one eyewitness told The Statesman in Austin.

Critically injured was one of Haley’s classmates, Zachary Sutterfield. According to friends, Zachary was transferring from Angelo State University to Texas State and was staying in the same apartment unit with Haley and Haley’s brother, Brian Frizzell, when the fire erupted.

Zachary sustained extensive burns over 70 percent of his body and a brain injury during the fire. He is currently hospitalized in a military hospital in San Antonio, according to friends. He is in a crucial window of recovery through the end of the day tomorrow and Zachary’s family requests prayers for good news.

Five people were reported missing and one critically injured. One of the missing, now presumed dead, in addition to the only reported critically injured victim, were from San Angelo. They were San Angelo Central High School class of 2017 former students.

Haley’s brother, Brian, wrote on her Facebook wall late last night.

“My sweet, sweet little sister, Haley Frizzell, my best friend in the world, the best person I know, is no longer with us. Thank you all for your care and support, but my family and I would like for everyone to respect our privacy and pray for and send good thoughts to Zachary Sutterfield. We love him. I love and miss my sister. There will be no more updates, please don’t ask for any. There are no words,” he wrote.

For the Frizzell and Sutterfield families, many are lifting them up in their prayers this Sunday morning.

The recovery efforts are beginning at the scene of the fire.

Update 12:30 p.m.

We originally reported the body was found. However, we have since learned recovery efforts are in the preliminary stages. Haley is presumed dead but there are no official announcements the body has been found.

Update 12:55 p.m.

The City of San Marcos said they anticipate sending out an update about the recovery effort later Sunday. So far, the last update was at 8:15 a.m. this morning involved requests for car owners with vehicles still parked at the apartments to come move them.

Update 4 p.m.

The City of San Marcos stated three bodies have been recovered from the fire scene. They are awaiting official identification of the bodies from the Travis County Medical Examiner's office.
