SAN ANGELO, TX --There’s a lot to choose from in the Christians In Action Thrift Store at 555 E. 6th Street. At 6,000 square feet, it’s almost impossible to see everything in one visit. Compared to other thrift stores in San Angelo there’s a larger volume of household furniture—complete dining sets, wardrobes, chests of drawers and couches. And there is a large selection of glass and crystal.
There’s a good selection of appliances, including lamps, and toasters. And the book section looks like a small library. They have everything from cookbooks to Tolstoy, fiction and nonfiction. On Tuesday and Thursday books are on sale for ten cents.
Seniors get 15% off on Monday. On Wednesday and Saturday clothing is 50% off. On Friday there is 10% off on clothing and accessories.
The price manager takes care of determining the cost for each item, and the pricing seemed competitive with other thrift stores.
According to Anna Ledesma, bookkeeper, and Elena Aguirre, Benevolent Fund Coordinator, “The Benevolence Fund helps residents take care of emergency needs such as rent and utilities. Families can take advantage of this assistance one time per year. Proof of income, identification, and a social security number is needed.”
“There’s a good supply of medical aides such as walkers, and Shannon Medical Center often refers patients there to take advantage of lower prices.”
“Clothing vouchers and furniture vouchers come with clients who are referred from other social service agencies.”
But there’s much more to Christians In Action than clothes and household goods.
“Community means anyone in need. Christians in Action donations stay in the community, but we help other organizations who need to raise funds.”
For example, Christians In Action is partnering with Airgas and accepting donations for the victims of Hurricane Harvey through Friday Sept. 1. Items needed are clothes, shoes, blankets, nonperishable food items, bottled water, and hygiene projects.
Said Ladesma, “People think the hurricanes are long gone and everyone has been taken care of, but there are still a lot of people trying to rebuild while living in poor housing.”
