SAN ANGELO, TX - Regardless of how fast or convenient looking things up on the internet is, there are still many people who prefer a good book. For those who don't want to pay the big box store prices, and, at the same time, help out a worthy cause, the Adult Literacy Council will be holding its annual 'Best Little Book Sale in Texas' this weekend.
Marilynn Golightly, director of the ALC said, "Friday, October 21, is preview night from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., with a $5 admission, and we will serve refreshments. The event will continue through the weekend, but many like to get the first picks and browse at their leisure."
Golightly said she's been here for 15 years and this event has been going on way before she came along.
"We receive book donations all year long from right here in the Concho Valley and beyond for our annual sale," she continued. "Some of the books are even brand new and have never been opened; we even get a lot of yearbooks from high schools."
The event will take place at the ALC at 59 E. 6th street, which will allow people to see the facility. After this evening's preview, the sale will continue on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on Monday the 24th at 9 a.m.
Suggested donation per book is $1 for hardbacks and 50 cents for a paperback. There will be banana boxes, but if people want to bring their own buggies and/or bags, they're encouraged to so.
"There have been people who will give $1, and the next person might give $100. All proceeds go to the ALC of the Concho Valley teaching adult learners to improve their skills," said Golightly. "We're fortunate to have a lot of volunteers, which are always greatly appreciated, and we take books anytime, even the day of the event."
The ALC's next event will be The Classics Never Go Out Of Style, which is a luncheon. There will be local celebrity waiters serving just about every kind of dish one could imagine, and the date and final touches are still in the works.
"It will probably be around Thanksgiving," noted Golightly.
