ASU Department of History to Host Great War Lecture

SAN ANGELO, TX - A press release from Angelo State University’s Department of History announced that it will host the first fall semester installment of the Great War Centennial Commemoration Lecture Series on Thursday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Houston Harte University Center, 1910 Rosemont Drive. 

Dr. Charles Endress, ASU Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus, will discuss the military history of World War I in his presentation, “The Sharp End: The Front Line Soldier on the Western Front in the Great War.” The lecture will take place in the University Center’s C.J. Davidson Conference Center and is open free to the public.

Two additional events are scheduled for the Great War Centennial Commemoration Lecture Series this fall: 

• 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27: “The War Poets: British Poetry and the Impact of the Great War.” Dr. Mark Hama, ASU professor of English, will discuss how the Great War influenced poetry and literature. 
• 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29: “Wristwatches, Intelligence Tests and Hemingway: The Cultural Impact of World War I on America.” Dr. Jennifer Keene, chair of the History Department at Chapman University in Orange, Calif., will discuss the cultural impact of the Great War on American life.

The three-year lecture series began in September 2015 and is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant No. AC-226771-15. The series commemorates World War I, also known as the Great War, and is co-organized by Dr. Christine Lamberson and Dr. Kanisorn Wongsrichanalai of ASU’s history faculty. It is also co-sponsored by the ASU West Texas Collection.
