The Pokémon Go app has gained a lot of traction across the world, and cities like San Angelo are also participating in this world wide phenomenon.
Trainers meet up at many popular Poké Stop locations across the city in downtown San Angelo and on ASU’s main campus.
As a result, some businesses in San Angelo have noticed the growing popularity of this app and have started hosting their own events to improve business.
San Angelo To Go Delivery
On July 16, San Angelo To Go Delivery hosted an event that brought in 350-375 in attendance at The Bosque on The Concho.
“Everybody was enjoying the game, and the excitement was noticeable from the families in attendance,” said Carson Beavers with San Angelo To Go. “It provided a chance to get outside with the kids and have some family fun.”
Leading up to the event, Go staff posted contests on their Facebook page to build up the excitement. They also held drawings for gift cards and handed out free t-shirts.
“Our business model circles around getting involved in the community,” Beavers said. “We want to get involved and help people out.”
After seeing how well these kind of events did in bigger cities, they were excited to bring one to the San Angelo community.
“We all played the Pokémon Games when we were kids, and to have it come full circle into our adult lives really inspired us to start it in our community,” Beavers added.
San Angelo Comic Con Poké-Walk: Saturday, July 30
Although the San Angelo To Go event is over, there are other events taking place, including the San Angelo Comic Con Poké-Walk. The free event encourages trainers to show up at The Bosque on the Concho to catch new Pokémon and make new friends.
Sarah Dunn with Silver Fire Productions is encouraging people get out to play a game they love while being outside and exercising.
The event will provide a chance to win passes to the San Angelo Comic Con (September 30 - Oct. 2th), and a free t-shirt give away to those who attend the Poké-Walk.
“We want to get the word out about the Comic Con, but to also bring the community together to have fun with other people and get some exercise,” Dunn said.
There will also be a guest appearance from the world famous Pickachu: a yellow mouse character that’s the face of the Pokémon franchise.
The Gathering Place: Saturday, Aug. 6
This gaming store at 3720 Sherwood Way wants to provide a safe and cool environment for Pokémon trainers to take a break from hunting Pokémon in the Texas summer. There will be free water handed out to those players who come and the option to sit inside the store for as long as the store is open from 12 p.m. – 12 a.m.
Dove Milhon, with The Gathering Place, said it’s important that safety is kept in mind while playing this game.
“We want to make sure that the community is safe, so we help facilitate that by providing trainers a safe place to meet,” said Milhon.
Gathering Place staff will also be dropping a Pokémon “lure,” which helps with attracting Pokémon to that area, specifically at the Angelo Bible Church right next to the store.
With all the events this summer, the San Angelo community can gather all the Pokémon they want, while bringing the community closer together.
